What Cloud Shell is
Cloud Shell is a Developer Workspace in the browser, not just SSH in a webpage. Each Dev Workspace is an isolated environment with its own OS image, CPU, memory, region and status, and opening one gives you a real terminal connected over an authenticated WebSocket.
You choose the OS from a catalog of ten images: Alpine, Debian Slim, Ubuntu 24.04, Wolfi, RHEL UBI Minimal, Azure Cloud Shell and Google Cloud Shell as containers, and FreeBSD, OpenBSD and SecBSD as virtual-machine guests on a serial console. Workspaces move through provisioning, running, sleeping, stopped and error.
What makes it a workspace is that it knows your platform. The sidebar lists your databases, buckets, projects, containers and SSH hosts, and Connect types the right command into the live terminal for you, using sealed connection details. Command history, favorites and read-only file browsing are built in.
Cloud Shell is scoped to the organization and has fifteen surfaces, from Overview and Workspaces to Sessions, Files, Databases, Object Storage, Containers, SSH Hosts, Deployment Logs, History, Favorites and Settings for theme, font size and default image. Kubernetes, Launch IDE and the AI dock are marked coming soon.
A workspace that knows your resources
One-click Connect
Connect from Databases, Object Storage, or SSH Hosts injects the right client command into the live terminal.
Real terminal
xterm.js over an authenticated WebSocket PTY, with tabs, split view, reconnect, and fullscreen.
Files at a glance
Browse and read workspace files from the sidebar without leaving the terminal.
History & favorites
Every command is kept per organization; re-run or pin the ones you use most.
SSH hosts
An inventory of SSH targets you can connect to straight from the workspace.
Sessions that survive
Reconnect to the same session; one active session per user and workspace, no duplicates.
Pick the OS you work in
Linux workspaces run as containers; BSD workspaces boot as full guests on a virtual serial console.

Click Connect, the command appears
Resource panels send an inject frame over the terminal WebSocket, so the command lands in your shell exactly as if you had typed it.
- Credentials come from sealed connection info, never from history
- Works with any client installed in your image
- Terminal theme, font size, and default image saved per organization

Common questions
Is this the same as the Agentic Terminal?
Cloud Shell is the workspace and terminal. The Agentic Terminal is the AI agent experience that runs inside it.
Are psql, kubectl, and mc preinstalled?
Not on every image. Connect may print “command not found” on minimal images — choose a fuller image like Ubuntu or Google Cloud Shell.
Can I edit or upload files?
The Files panel is read-only for now; edit inside the terminal. Upload and write support are planned.
What about Kubernetes and VS Code in the browser?
Kubernetes context, Launch IDE, and the AI dock are shown as Coming soon.
